TEA's BIBLE

Harvest: Mid-season

Samidori

One of the important cultivars for tencha in Uji: dependable under shade and a good yielder.

Where it came from

Selected from local Uji stock by the Uji grower Masajiro Koyama (line name Koyama 69) and released in 1954. It carries no Tea Norin number, and has long been grown around Uji.

Character

High-yielding and dependable under shade. It lacks the refinement of Asahi, but the balance of workability and volume has long supported Uji's tencha fields.

What it suits

Tencha (for matcha) and gyokuro.
