TEA's BIBLE

Harvest: Late

Gokou

An Uji cultivar for gyokuro and tencha, with a pronounced aroma when shaded.

Where it came from

Selected from local Uji stock by the Kyoto Prefectural Tea Research Institute (line name Kyoken 166) and released in 1954. It carries no Tea Norin number.

Character

Under shade it develops the seaweed-like covering scent very strongly, along with heavy savoriness. Grown in full sun it does not show much — this is a cultivar that assumes shading.

What it suits

Gyokuro and tencha. A regular near the top of the national competition.
